What is the difference between The First Trimester Screening Program (FTS) and astraia.obsterics?

FTS and astraia.obsterics are completely different products!

Firstly, the FTS software only contains the outdated FMF 2012 risk algorithm. astraia.obsterics, on the other hand, contains the latest FMF risk algorithm - FMF 2018 risk algorithm - which includes the updated MoMs in addition to the new Pre-eclampsia risk calculated throughout all three trimesters. Since the FTS software was designed exclusively for the FMF risk calculation, it is severely limited in terms of content and functionality. For example, unlike with astraia.obstetrics, it is not possible to document other ultrasound examinations such as growth and anomaly scans, or report on laboratory analyses and invasive procedures. astraia.obstetrics offers not only better reporting but also greater flexibility. Furthermore, users who want to further extend the functionalities available to them, there is the possibility of purchasing essential add-ons such as the image viewer and ultrasound device connectivity.

Can astraia.obstetrics be connected to laboratory analysers to transfer the biochemistry markers needed for risk calculation?

Yes, it is possible to connect astraia.obsterics to laboratory analysers that are certified by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FM) for the FMF risk calculation. However, it is not possible with the free FMF package. You will have to opt for the regular installation with another kind of database.

This feature allows you to automatically transmit the laboratory order with the patient data from astraia to the analysers and, vice versa, to import the values back once the measurements have been performed. If you work at a laboratory and use astraia.obsterics exclusively for risk calculations (i.e. you do not perform clinical examinations), a direct connection to the laboratory information system (LIS) might be more suitable for you (see next FAQ).

The following analysers are authorised for the transmission of PAPP-A and Free-ß-HCG:

  • BRAHMS Kryptor Compact plus and Gold
  • Roche Cobas
  • Perkin Elmer DELFIAXpress, ManualDELFIA, AutoDELFIA and DBS
  • Siemens ADVIA XP/XTP, CP and Attelica

The following analysers are authorised for the transmission of PlGF:

  • BRAHMS Kryptor Compact plus and Gold,
  • Roche Cobas
  • Perkin Elmer DELFIAXpress, ManualDELFIA and AutoDELFIA

The following analysers are authorised for the transmission of sFLT-1:

Who is eligible to receive a free astraia.obsterics license?

Exclusively FMF certified users with a valid certificate of competence to measure nuchal translucency (or more).

My FMF license is expired. Can I still get a free astraia.obsterics license?

Yes, you can get the package ‚astraia.obstetrics for FMF certified users. With that package you can use our software to store examinations, but you will not be able to calculate any risk. For that you will have to renew your FMF certification.

Why is The First Trimester Screening Program (FTS) not replaced with a similar product?

The development of a separate product is very costly and inefficient. In addition, there are strict regulations for medical devices such as astraia and most countries require registration. With this in mind, and since FMF certified users benefit from a more comprehensive and superior product with astraia.obstetrics, we have decided with Prof. Nicolaides to go for this more favourable and sustainable solution.

What is included in the free license of astraia.obstetrics for FMF certified users?

The free license for FMF certified users includes:

How many users can work with the free astraia.obstetrics for FMF certified users?

What is the difference between the astraia.obstetrics license and FMF license?

The astraia.obstetrics license is issued by NEXUS / ASTRAIA GmbH and entitles the user to use this specific module. Licenses are also required for all other astraia modules and add-ons.

The FMF risk calculation is the intellectual property of the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF London) and the FMF license is therefore directly issued by the FMF. It authorises the use of the FMF risk algorithm in astraia. This means that without a valid FMF license the FMF algorithm cannot be used in the astraia.obsterics module.

Depending on the FMF certificate of competency held, an FMF license may contain different permissions: a nuchal translucency (NT) certificate allows the calculation of trisomy risks based on NT. Certificates for the measurement of nasal bone (NB), ductus venosus (DV) and ductus venosus PI (DV) allow the inclusion of these additional markers in the trisomy risk calculation. A PE certificate allows the calculation of the risk of pre-eclampsia, an FGR certificate allows the calculation of the fetal growth restriction risk and PT allows the calculation of the preterm delivery risk.

The annual audit and the issuing of the FMF license is carried out by the FMF. More information about the FMF license / Certificate of competence can be found on the FMF website: https://fetalmedicine.org

Why do I have to submit my FMF license?

We need to verify whether your FMF license it is valid, i.e. if you have a valid FMF certificate of competence to do the nuchal translucency scan. After every verification, whether successful or not, we will immediately delete any record of your FMF license.

Do I have to send in the FMF license every year after a successful FMF audit?

No, the astraia software updates your FMF license automatically if you are connected to the internet (assuming your audit was successful!). If you are working offline, you can import your new FMF license manually.

Where do I find my FMF license?
  1. Click on this link FMF Courses - FMF Courses to go to the "FMF own page" of the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) website and log in with your credentials.

  2. Download the FMF license version 3
